As a lover of fashion, there is no better place on earth than New York City. I’m in a New York state of mind since returning from our annual mom-and-daughter trip to NYC during Fashion Week. Our trips are always jam-packed and although we leave with jelly legs, we’re always overflowing with inspiration and motivation going into the fall - the best fashion season of the year if you ask me! But with the Canadian dollar being what it is, we found new things to try without breaking the bank (aka: free things to do) that still left us fashion inspired.
Fashion Walk of Fame
Along New York City’s 7th Avenue, between 35th and 41st street, lives NYC’s Fashion Walk of Fame. This stretch of 7th Ave., known as Fashion Avenue, hosts 28 bronze plaques highlighting American designers who have been influential worldwide. Each plaque includes the designer’s name, a brief description of their contribution to fashion accompanied with a sketch from one of their collections. A great opportunity to brush up on your fashion designer trivia and knowledge!
The Garment District hosts the Fashion Walk of Fame as well as other landmarks that pay tribute to the long standing history of the American fashion industry. Keep your eyes open for The Garment Worker and Needle and Button sculptures - they are large in scale and difficult to miss. On the streets in and around the area, you’ll find great fabric and notion stores if the city’s inspires you to start a new project…
Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology)
Regarded as one of the top fashion schools in the world, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) hosts various exhibitions in its museum throughout the year at no charge to visitors. Check it out!
Saks, Bergdorf’s & Barney’s
If you haven’t been inspired yet walking the streets of NYC, take a stroll through Saks, Bergdorf’s & Barney’s to drool - I mean dream - over the beautiful designs and displays throughout these stores. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
NYC Fashion Influencers
Lastly, and possibly most importantly, make sure to follow your favourite NYC-based fashion bloggers on their various social media platforms - you never know when they may be hosting a sponsored event in the city that you can attend free of charge! I had a wonderful time last year attending Garance Doré’s and being introduced to Aurélie Biderman and her world of jewelry.
