Where to eat in New York City

I would consider myself one of the lucky ones. Although I’ve had my own challenges with food over the years, I’ve never had a serious allergy that has kept me from eating whatever I wanted. I’ve always been open minded to trying new things and as the years have past, and while being spoiled with the food of Toronto, my tastes and expectations of food have changed.

But what do you do when you’re traveling with someone who does have an allergy? One that makes it difficult to eat out no matter the type of fare? Do you just give in and go to the first vegan/gluten free/soy free/nut free (read: boring) restaurant you find? No; you find a restaurant where the gluten free options are just as good as the regular ones. And that’s exactly what my mom and I did on our trip to New York City! We didn’t let her gluten allergy stop us and found ourselves brainstorming and planning our respective creative projects over some of the best meals I’ve ever had. You have to check out these restaurants next time you’re in NYC:

Brunch/Lunch: Rosemary’s - Ironically, I had been to Rosemary’s Tokyo, modeled after this New York City establishment, before visiting the original and needless to say, it did not disappoint. We were smart to arrive before 11am to beat the rush and would highly recommend the fig and prosciutto foccace.

Cocktails: The Crosby Bar - If you’re looking to rest your feet after a day’s shopping in Soho, head here for a classy atmosphere and a drink menu that boasts cocktails of every spirit and a great wine list.

Dinner: Rubirosa Ristorante - The fact that we ate here twice (during a four day trip) says it all. This unsuspecting restaurant serves some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had and an extensive menu for the gluten intolerant. We found the dinner portions healthy so I would recommend sharing, which also gives you the opportunity to try more dishes!

Dessert: Little Cupcake Bakeshop - This little Soho gem is good for any time of the day when you’re looking for a quick sugar fix. Not only do they offer every type of cupcake imaginable, their cookie, brownie and puddings all come in varieties of vegan and gluten friendly.

Bon Appétit! Let me know in the comments below if you have a favourite NYC restaurant I should add to my list!
